Yesterday, we had a bit of a nasty thunderstorm that left us without power for most of the day. My kids were driving me a little crazy, so I figured it was best to get them out of the house for awhile. We headed to grandpa's house. The kids were excited that the weather cleared up shortly after we arrived so they could swim in the pool. We decided to make tacos for dinner. For whatever reason, I ended up reading the back of the package of the taco seasoning, mainly the ingredients-- do you know there is silica (silicon dioxide) in the store bought seasoning mix? Silica is what is in that little packet that comes inside of items when you buy them that says DO NOT EAT! Silica is also used to make glass! I couldn't believe it when I read it. Let's just say, that is the last time my family uses store bought taco seasoning! This morning, I made my own taco seasoning. Now, I know exactly what is in it every time I use it. It was so easy to make, it only took a few minutes and was so cheap to make! I picked up my seasonings in the dollar store, I'm sure you can find them even cheaper than $1.
Taco Seasoning
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup chili powder
- 1/2 cup ground cumin
- 1/2 cup garlic powder
- 1/2 cup onion powder
- 1/8-1/4 cup crushed red pepper (depending on how spicy you want it)
Directions
- Mix all the spices together and store in an airtight container.
- After you cook your ground beef, add as much or as little as you like to flavor the meet. Add a small amount of water if needed to season the meat evenly.
Yuck! And I bet you there is MSG in the taco seasoning as well since it's in a lot of powder stuff like that.

How'd the tacos turn out? I should make some of this up, I have ground beef that I should turn into tacos.

I always make my own since the packaged stuff oftentimes has wheat or has been processed with wheat. Plus it's cheaper :)
ReplyDeleteGood to know! My family likes to make our own seasonings, too! They usually come out better than the store bought versions. We would scan the ingredients list of the store bought/pre-packaged spices and add the individual spices we like.
